Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about customs clearance in Ireland
What is AIS and how is it different from the old system?
AIS (Automated Import System) is Irish Revenue's system for submitting import declarations. It replaced the older AEP (Automated Entry Processing) system to bring Ireland in line with the EU Union Customs Code. All Irish import declarations are now made through AIS, with most also requiring an Entry Summary Declaration (ENS) under ICS2.
Do I need an EORI number to import to Ireland?
Yes. An Irish EORI number (format: IE followed by your tax reference) is mandatory for any business or individual importing or exporting goods. Without one, your shipment will be held at the border. We can register you with Revenue, usually within one working day.
How long does customs clearance take at Dublin Port?
For pre-lodged declarations, customs clearance at Dublin Port and Rosslare is typically completed within the time it takes the ferry to dock. We submit the AIS declaration and PBN before your goods arrive, so the vehicle can usually drive straight off the ferry.
What is a PBN (Pre-Boarding Notification)?
A PBN is required for goods moving on the Customs RoRo Service — the ferry routes between Ireland and Great Britain such as Dublin–Holyhead and Rosslare–Pembroke. The haulier needs the PBN reference before boarding. Without it, the truck cannot board the ferry. We prepare and issue PBNs as part of our clearance service.
How do I import a car from the UK to Ireland?
Three steps: (1) lodge a customs declaration on AIS and pay any customs duty and VAT at import — that's what we do; (2) book an NCTS inspection within 30 days of arrival; (3) pay VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) through Revenue's ROS or myAccount. We handle the customs side and guide you through VRT and NCTS.
What documents do I need for import clearance?
Typically: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or CMR waybill, and your EORI number. Depending on the goods, you may also need certificates of origin (for preferential rates), health/phytosanitary certificates (for food, plants, animal products) or import licences.
Do I need to file Intrastat and VIES returns?
Intrastat is required if your annual EU arrivals exceed €500,000 or dispatches exceed €635,000 (Ireland's current thresholds). VIES is required for all B2B intra-EU sales of goods and services regardless of value. We file both for you and monitor your thresholds so you stay compliant.
Do you handle goods from Türkiye?
Yes. We specialise in supporting Turkish exporters and importers trading with Ireland, including ATR1 movement certificates for preferential rates under the EU–Türkiye Customs Union. We provide bilingual English and Turkish support throughout the process.
How much does customs clearance cost?
Our fees depend on the type and complexity of the declaration. Standard import or export declarations start from a flat fee, with transit and vehicle clearance priced on the consignment. Contact us for a transparent, no-obligation quote — no hidden charges.
